Her tale begins in 1910 Wishing, Texas when a smelly buffoon, two professors, and a windmiller - each on a personal quest of one kind or another - cross paths at Nell's beloved Carrageen Ranch. But she holds to her plan to travel in spite of the chaos around her and ends up in dire circumstances oceans away from "everyone who knows her history."
