"Mrs. Perkin's Ball," even more than "Vanity Fair" or "The Book of Snobs," gave Thackeray popularity is one of the best known remarks upon him: and probably has at least as much truth about it as most such sayings.

Thackeray, however, had been wise enough not to make them Christmas Books only, or even mainly. Dances of the cheerful Perkins kind were indeed usually given in the winter of old time; school naturally suggests Christmas holidays; and The Rose and the Ring was written to supply the want of Twelfth-night 'characters'.

In writing of Dickens the name of Thackeray naturally presents itself, and undoubtedly the success of Dickens' Christmas books prompted Thackeray also to issue volumes for the festive season. Quite in contrast was " Mrs. Perkin's Ball," the first of Thackeray's Christmas books, first published in 1847, the year of " Vanity Fair." Thackeray's book was illustrated by himself, while Dickens' "Christmas Carol "was illustrated by John Leech. "Mrs. Perkin's Ball" was announced as "containing twenty-three gorgeous plates of beauty, rank and fashion, and seventy or eighty selected portraits of the friends of Mrs. Perkins." The publication was a big success, and created much interest through its quaint humor and satire.
