XXX: Behind the Scenes of Porn Valley vol. 2 (1997-1998)

At the beginning of 1998, I had become a staple visitor to porn productions all around the Valley. There were only a handful of us porn reporters at the time and it felt like a very exclusive clique.

Truth was, the porn producers were eager to have any press on set to garner their productions any degree of publicity. At the end of the 90's, that pool of attendees was small ... but it wouldn't be long before the Internet changed all that.

Nevertheless, the 90's was the heyday of porndom's circus-style productions - gangbangs, parties, orgies, freaks, geeks and midgets. You name it. If it was odd, distasteful or revolting, the porn world wanted to tackle it.

It was really two worlds concurring side by side. On the one hand, porn's seedier side was tackled by the likes of Jim Powers and John T. Bone. Meanwhile, Jenna Jameson was a burgeoning mega-star and was helping to bridge the gap between Porn Valley and Hollywood.

Somewhere in between, however, were the likes of Matt Zane and the youthful 20somethings that were doing something to the porn industry that perhaps the industry hadn't seen since the outlaw days of the 1970's. They were striving to make porn cool.

I think that in light of the industry's subsequent rise — not just financially, but into mainstream pop culture as well — they succeeded.
