Ray Bennett is coming home. He is paroled after spending 15 years in the Mississippi State Penitentiary, otherwise known as Parchman Farm, for a crime that never happened. All he wants to do is revive his grandfather's long dormant custom farming business, get to know the daughter that he has never seen, and find some peace.
The problem is the old place is falling apart. The equipment is old, worn out, in disrepair, and near obsolete. Not to mention that it's late in the season and trust in Ray Bennett is in very short supply. Parole got him out of prison, it didn't clear his name.
Then there is the daughter that Ray has never seen. Emmy has grown up believing that another man was her father. And she has grown up hating "that Ray Bennett" and blaming him for every bad thing that has ever happened in her life. Everyone thinks that the truth might destroy her. But ultimately, the lie is always the greater instrument of destruction.
That brings us to Carl Sullivan. Ray will have no peace if Carl has his way. In fact, Carl will stop at nothing to take all that Ray has or ever hopes to have. He is powerful enough to make good on his threats. He doesn't care who else goes down in the process.
One man of faith, searching for peace, truth, and redemption. One man filled with greed and lust for vengeance. Who will survive when the two collide and those most innocent are caught in the middle? And will the faith that has brought Ray so far remain when all seems lost?
Troubled Fields is a story of a few people in the rural community of Dover in fictional Winstead County, Mississippi. Ray, despite all of his troubles, has an indomitable spirit. And he accumulates a crew of unique individuals from the young Matt Warren, to a "resourceful" mechanic, Thomas, who is also Ray's best friend from Parchman, to the older, eccentric Bob Riley, all who help him and help each other and have fun, well ... for the most part, along the way.
