ABOUT THE BOOK

Read any of F. Scott Fitzgeralds five novels to be transported into a gin-soaked world of hedonistic parties, romantic illusions, jazz babies, beautiful people, and reckless abandon. The Beautiful and Damned reveals the dark underbelly of that world, which can be as bleak as it is glamorous. Traces of it can still be found in contemporary celebrity magazines or accounts of dot.com parties.

Some see the novel as a product of Fitzgeralds sophomore slump, but in many ways, its more raw and authentic than the elegant The Great Gatsby. At every turn, main characters Anthony Patch and Gloria Gilbert choose to live as if they dont give a damn, but the magnificent attitude of not giving a damn altered overnight; from being a mere tenet of Glorias it became the entire solace and justification for what they chose to do and what consequence it brought. Although Anthony and Gloria believe that theyre living for the moments happiness, they are deluded. Theyre utterly unhappy.

While the events that occur in their lives might be construed by critics as melodramatic, they illustrate the inevitable descent into madness that accompanies total apathy. The Beautiful and Damned is a gripping drama of self-destruction that rivals the pulpiest and most entertaining television shows and movies of today. Yet, its beautiful language and slightly experimental interludes show Fitzgerald in the process of becoming a masterful prose stylist.
