SYNOPSIS

In this must-read romance from Ethel Dell full of sparkling dialog at times reminiscient of Oscar Wilde, the heroine Olga Ratcliffe is the beloved niece of Nick Ratcliffe, the same Nick Ratcliffe who was the hero of Ethel Dell's first book "The Way of the Eagle". This tale of love will lead the reader down a long and winding road full of confusion and doubt. Olga's story, shocking for its time, grapples with themes of romantic love, deep friendship between woman, opium dependency, euthanasia, and more. Along the way a series of men come into her life all with the desire to be her husband, but it is unclear who will win her hand.

Major Hunt Goring, a man old enough to be her father with a highly successful yet despicable reputation with women, will try every trick in the book to get Olga to agree to be his wife. Blackmail, drugs and lies are his tactics. Will his ceaseless trickery wear Olga down and defeat her in the end?

The two Wyndham brothers vye for her hand. Max, a brilliant doctor, torments her with teasing and keeps Olga on edge. There is something in those unforgettable piercing green eyes of his that she can not free herself from, even in her dreams. And Max knows her secret, one she herself is unable to remember.

Young Noel Wyndham is the opposite of Max. A soldier by trade he is handsome, charming, light-hearted and sincere. He meets Olga when she travels to India just when she needs a friend. Will his youthful energy and devotion to her make her happy? Can he help her overcome the nightmares she doesn't understand? Read, find out and enjoy!

EXCERPT

"But this man hasn't got any manners at all," objected Olga. "And he's so horribly satirical. It's like having a stinging-nettle in the house. I believe—just because he's clever in his own line—that he's been spoilt. As if everybody couldn't do something!"

"Ah! That's the point," said Nick sententiously. "Everybody can, but it isn't everybody who does. Now this young man apparently knows how to make the most of his opportunities. He plays a rattling hand at bridge, by the way."

"I wonder if he cheats," said Olga. "I'm sure he's quite unscrupulous."

Nick turned his head, and surveyed her from under his restless eyelids. "I begin to think you must be falling in love with the young man," he observed.
