"Recollections of the John Brown Raid by a Virginian who Witnessed the Fight." The author represented Virginia in the U. S. Congress, 1859-1861; served in the Confederate States House of Representatives, 1862-1864; and was a member of Gen. "Stonewall" Jackson's staff for over a year. Later on, U. S. President, Chester A. Arthur, appointed him a member of the Tariff Commission and afterward he worked in the U. S. Department of Justice until his death. — He lived in Shepherdstown, Virginia (now West Virginia)—a short distance from Harper's Ferry—at the time of the John Brown Raid and relates the facts as a reliable eye-witness to the events which took place on those days in mid October, 1859. He also records the essence of a personal interview with Brown shortly after his arrest and incarceration.
