Although several Southern states had already seceded, led by South Carolina shortly after his election, President Abraham Lincoln still hoped to preserve the Union until the attack on Fort Sumter, which commenced April 12, 1861. Although nobody was killed, the federal garrison had to surrender the fort after a day of shelling. The Civil War had just started.

A Collection of Pictures from Fort Sumter is a collection of 40 pictures taken shortly after the bombardment and surrender of the Fort. These historic pictures offer various views inside and outside of the fort, as well as views of Charleston and the surrounding areas. It also includes 1865 pictures of the raising of the American flag after Union forces took back the fort. Those pictures were taken on April 14, 1865, the same day Lincoln was assassinated.
