Xavior Rivers has hitched across the country in response to his aunt's letter. Upon arrival, he discoveers he has inherited a section of land in the Appalchian wilderness. The Vietnam vet has been riding his thumb trying to excape the his personal combat horrors and the inhertiance seems to be the answer. His trouble start upon acceptance of the deed. First, the sheriff cons him into undertaking a spy mission on his deputy which results in a confrontation. Second, he is kidnapped by a rifle weilding psychotic teen and led deeper into the wildneress. When he meets Orie and Issac Wilson, he doens't realize he has met the devil and his archangle on earth. Only Sarah is an innocent member of the family and she has no idea of what is taking place. When he questions the Wilsons about the location of his property, the deception continues and he is pushed in the wrong direction. Though haunted by his memories and doubtful of his future, he finds the girlish Sarah enchanging and sexually attractive. She, on the other hand, is from mountain stock -- not too trusting and determined that any man in her future will accept her as a equal. When they find love it is sudden, passionate, and lasting. However, unknown to the couple, the Wilson family is deterined to take control of Xavior's property, to frame him for the murder of a family enemy and to kill him to both cover their tracks and wrestle the his property from Sarah. When the first killing takes place, the chase is on and Xavior becomes a near victim to a plan that backfires because love proves stronger than family. Mature readers only.
