At a rundown house trailer on a dirt road in the foothills of the Pinal Mountains an investigator is looking into allegations of child abuse. He stands on the threshold of a horrific scene of drug-fueled debauchery that has ended in the rape and murder of a young girl while her mother lies in a drunken stupor and the younger siblings wander through the desert alone and abandoned. Before opening the door the investigator will become the next victim in a crime spree that peels back the scab covering the Warner clan's long history of violence
SACRIFICIAL LAMBS, a novel set in fictional Davison County, Arizona, tackles the heart-rending issues of child abuse and domestic violence with brutal clarity. In the current climate of policy debates about how our society will take care of its most vulnerable members, SACRIFICIAL LAMBS personalizes the issue and reveals the life-threatening costs of violence on children, families and communities.
The characters confront the destructive evil of abuse even as they wrestle with their own personal dilemmas; an administrator haunted by nightmares of childhood experiences, a county sheriff bearing the scars of an old case that informs his sense of justice and a brother who escaped from his brutish father at a young age and now in his sunset years must contend with the family curse and rescue the next generation of children.
The novel takes the reader into the heart of the communities where many families of the Warner clan live, dying towns situated along the dusty roads of the barren landscape, abandoned by mining companies and left to whither in the southwestern desert of Arizona. The characters are driven into confrontation with the emotional, psychological, and real-life threat posed by the clan's hidden secrets. Members of the clan cope with the legacy of violence in their own way, some struggling for redemption of the family name and others succumbing to the inevitable consequences of their crimes.
