The title, "A Splendid Hazard" by Harold MacGrath, suggests not only a dangerous escapade typical of his stories, but because it is "splendid" we guess that it may be especially dangerous or the people concerned may be especially great.

We regret to say that in this instance the title is more bold and dashing than the adventure. It is the story of a search for a hidden treasure and a plot for a throne. A Napoleon pretender learns of the whereabouts of a large sum of money concealed on the island of Corsica, and intends to assist in placing a fourth Napoleon on the throne of France.

After various adventures, which may have been hazardous, but certainly not splendid, he obtains the treasure only to find that he has been constantly shadowed by an emissary of the French Government and that but for the kindness of the latter he would have been duped by his colleagues. The conclusion is so flat and quiet it leaves the reader with the same disgusted feeling he has when he falls from a first-floor window. The height is not much, but the fall is great.
