This was the thirteenth Scarlet Pimpernel novel written, however, it is fifteenth if read chronologically. It story of a poor village boy whom grows up to hate the aristocrats who rule the countryside. But with the onset of the French Revolution, he finds the opportunity for revenge. The daughter of the Monsignor must marry him or both will face the guillotine. It should be read after THE TRIUMPH OF THE SCARLET PIMPERNEL and before PIMPERNEL AND ROSEMARY.
