One the nineteenth century's most well-known naturalists, Henry David Thoreau was also a transcendentalist, philosopher and social reformer, in addition to being prolific essayist, poet and author. A friend and neighbor to another celebrated figure in the nineteenth century transcendentalist movement, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Thoreau was mentored by Emerson.
