By 1999, porndom's circus-style feats of amazement were at their height, and porn companies were vying to outshine each other with sexual acts that were more outrageous than the next.
The European porn industry had perfected the gaping a**hole trick and the Americans had rushed to capitalize on this wildly popular new feat. The gangbang had also become a marketable spectacle that was simply out of control. What started with Anabel Chong and Jasmin St. Claire had snowballed into the Spantaneeus Xtasty 551 and The Houston 620.
While the math behind the gangbang numbers were certainly dubious, the growing crowds of fan-participation pornography were very much real. The big question was: Where was this all going? Where would it lead? At what point would the circus acts reach their peak?
Certainly in 1999, there was no sign that porn's circus-style atmosphere would slow down.
Meanwhile, the biggest name in the porn industry, Jenna Jameson, had taken a break and left a major power vacuum in her wake. Her peers at Wicked Pictures, like Serenity, Sydnee Steele and Stephanie Swift, were eager to fill the void that porn's biggest name had left.
And all the while, a continuous influx of new talent streamed into the business in droves. Jenna had literally blown the doors off the porn industry, put the business into the mainstream eye and had become the inspiration for a whole new generation of eager young women.
The turn of the century was approaching and, with it, a whole new take on how mainstream America would begin to view sexuality. American sex was becoming a performance piece. Mainstream performers would soon view porn as a way to boost their public appeal (thanks to the success of the Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee sex tape). As porn continued to spread through mainstream American consciousness, the country's youth were being taught sexuality in a whole new way.
For better or for worse, the porn train was heading down the tracks at full steam. And the brakes, it seemed, had long ago been thrown off.
