Black Elk was a holy man of the Oglala Lakota Native American tribe centered around Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. As a child he had a deep and complex prophetic vision which he spent most of his life interpreting; he witnessed the battle of Wounded Knee, traveled with Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show, and narrated his life story to John Neihardt, who published the tale in Black Elk Speaks.
