ABOUT THE BOOK
...the story of SB 1070 is the story of an arrogant, outofcontrol federal government. Governor Jan Brewer
Jan Brewer's Scorpions for Breakfast: My Fight Against Special Interests, Liberal Media, and Cynical Politicos to Secure America's Border, is a war diary straight from the legal, cultural, political, and lawenforcement battles raging on the USMexican border.
Relations between the two countries have been problematic since 1846, when the two countries went to war, and troubled since 1835, when Texas fought for independence from Mexico. More recent history has seen the bracero program of WWII years, and other guest worker programs allowing Mexican workers access to the US labor market. Ronald Reagan gave an amnesty to existing illegals in the 1980s, but an attempt at an amnesty by US government in 2007 was stopped by an unexpected grassroots backlash. This was soon after the Minutemen mainly concerned Arizona civilians began to patrol the border to help the government stop illegal immigration.
EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK
The horrible violence of the drug and humansmuggling cartels is out of control. Misery and danger await the average illegal immigrant crossing into Arizona under the brutal regime of the smuggling gangs. People crossing into the US are known as pollos (Spanish for chickens), and the sophisticated smuggling gangs who get them across the border are called polleros (chicken farmers). Gone are the days of lowtech and nonviolent coyotes guiding small groups of illegals into the US.
A recent addition to the mix is the appearance of bajadores (chicken thieves), also known as rip crews gangs who prey on humansmuggling and drugsmuggling gangs. These rip crews are known for their extreme violence, standing out as extraordinary in an already incredibly violent sphere. Immigrants are often held at socalled drop houses where they must remain until their debt is paid. Some are tortured and held for ransom even after the transit fee is made good, if the smugglers learn that a migrant has relatives in the US who can pay.
Brewer decided that she had to do what she could to protect her state herself, if the feds werent going to lift a finger to help stop this tidal wave of illegal immigration. She proposed and signed into law SB 1070, that would, among other things, allow Arizona law enforcement to make inquiries regarding documentation of people stopped for other infractions or crimes. This set off a firestorm, and Brewer was labeled a racist and fascist by much of the American and world media...
