ABOUT THE BOOK

Whitney Houston rose to prominence in the 1980s on the strength of her stunning voice and pedigree. Born in Newark, New Jersey, on August 9, 1963, she was the daughter of lauded gospel singer Cissy Houston, the cousin of Dionne Warwick, and the goddaughter of Aretha Franklin.

A successful model before her music career launched into the stratospheres, Houston made history as one of the first African American models on the cover of Seventeen magazine. Classic Whitney; this was just the first of many precedents she pioneered.

She remains the only artist to have seven consecutive #1 hits on the Billboard Hot 100. Her debut album, Whitney Houston, was the bestselling debut album by a female artist at the time. She also stakes claim to the bestselling gospel album of all time with the soundtrack to her 1996 film, The Preachers Wife. The soundtrack to her debut film, The Bodyguard, however, is both the bestselling soundtrack of all time and one of the bestselling albums of all time with 44 million copies sold worldwide.

EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK

Houston struggled with drug addiction and her own personal demons from the mid-1990s through the end of her life. Although she continued to release music sporadically, her squeaky clean image would suffer as a result of these struggles and her seemingly tumultuous marriage to husband, Bobby Brown, whom she divorced in 2007. 2009 returned Houston to the music scene with her first album in six years, I Look To You, which debuted at the top spot on the Billboard 200, with 305,000 copies sold its first week.

Hype was starting to build in the beginning of the 2012 over the film, Sparkle. Promotional images from the film were released featuring Houston with Sparks on January 31, but just twelve days later it was announced that Whitey Houston had dead in her hotel room at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. Houston died on the eve of the pre-Grammy party her mentor, Clive Davis, threw every year the night before the ceremony, and at which she often performed. She was only 48 years-old.
