In the recent past, there has been a numerous increase in what are called near misses by the astronomical community and these are modestly reported in the news media. It is highly questionable whether or not there is in fact an increase in the numbers of asteroids which come in close proximaty to the Earth. The world astronomical community has an ever evolving increased ability to detect these objects objects in space whether near or at extreme distances. From the publics perspective, the increase in numbers of detected and identified asteroids is either due to our increased ability to detect them or their detection has recently been available to the public.
In either case, it is becoming obvious to the public that there a great deal more near Earth asteroids or asteroids which will be near Earth than they were aware of previously.. An asteroid that was considered being a rogue object which rarely passes anywhere near the earth is now slowly being perceived by any interested individual as one of many thousands scattered throughout our solar system.
