STARVED BOOK, by Edgar Lee Masters.
When Edgar Lee Masters wrote "Spoon River Anthology," back in 1915, he gained a new army of admirers almost instantly. The number of his followers materially increased by his book, "Starved Rock." This volume, containing forty-four poems, is just as full of beauty, good humor, satire and rhythm as any of his previous work, in spite of the occasional super-flights of fancy that may seem overdone.
For sheer beauty and effective choice of words and phrases that present a clear picture, it is difficult to find anything in Mr. Masters' previous writings to surpass the title poem, "Starved Rock." For dramatic effect "Washington Hospital" is creditable. "Chicago" is another of the collection that is well done—that is, for the man or woman who really knows Chicago.
Starved rock is a prodigal book. There is vitality in every poem. And with the realization of death there goes a delight in the symbols and processes of life being lived.
