Set in New York City, How I Met Your Mother juxtaposes a traditional sitcom format, featuring multiple cameras, a laugh track, and a 30-minute runtime with a unique structural approach. The show is told from the perspective of its narrator (voiced by Bob Saget), who recounts the story of how he met his childrens mother to those now-teenage children in the year 2030. Except for brief moments featuring this unseen narrator talking to his seemingly bored children, the shows actual story takes place in our time (2005-present).
MEET THE AUTHOR
Gideon Cross is a Los-Angeles-based writer who holds a Master of Fine Arts Degree in Screenwriting from Loyola Marymount University. He has published journalism and short fiction in professional markets, and recently sold a feature-length screenplay to Paradigm Pictures. Gideon's interests and hobbies include poker, martial arts, and non-dual spiritual traditions (e.g. advaita and zen). EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK
While working on The Late Show, Thomas and Bays lived together in a Manhattan apartment and even shared a pet cat. Their experiences as twentysomething friends exploring New York City and growing into their adult selves would eventually form much of the basis for How I Met Your Mother, which was developed during their time at The Late Show. In 2002, the duo moved to Los Angeles together with the goal of getting How I Met Your Mother picked up by a major network.
The importance of finding the right mate: Teds search to find his soulmate is tireless, and his belief that his future wife is out there somewhere, waiting for him, rarely wavers. As the protagonist, Ted serves as a surrogate for the showrunners in many ways, and his message that finding the right partner is the most important thing we can do in life resonates as one of the shows major themes.
