I moved to San Diego County with my family at the age of ten in 1945. We found it rich in history. It was first settled by the Native Kumeyaay Indians, and then along came the explorers from Europe and the Padres of the Church.

This area has always been an exciting place for a ten-year-old to grow up, with the wonderful gift of freedom to live and mingle with such a diversity of people. We had one High School in East County, Grossmont High, with a winning football team and the wonderful angelic sound of our world-famous Red Robe Choir.

There were plenty of mysterious and fascinating Indians still around. I have many fond and exciting memories of San Diego County that I wished to write about and share with readers and close friends, many of whom are the proud Kumeyaay. Be sure to read about "Wampum."
