A good story of earlier pioneer days is "Scouting with Daniel Boone," by Everett T. Tomlinson with illustrations by Norman Rockwell.

The career of Daniel Boone is fascinating to everyone, and it is told here in a narrative which is essentially true to history. The one who tells the tale is a young fellow seventeen years old, a friend of one of the sons of the famous scout. When that son was killed, Daniel Boone took the boy's friend into his charge and was accompanied by him on many
of his expeditions. Here is a good Indian story which is not only as exciting as one could wish, but is also a part of our own early history.

The story opens in the year 1773 with a band of settlers from Yadkln, North Carolina on its way to Kentucky under the leadership of Daniel Boone. James Boone, the scout's eldest son, and a friend Peleg Barnes, are the two boys whose adventures are related.

The story vividly details frontier life of the days when buffaloes roamed the plains and warring bands of Indians were a constant peril.
