Henry James

The American author Henry James (April 15, 1843 – February 28, 1916) wrote much about the American character, often comparing it against its European counterparts. His short story "Pandora," written in 1884, is a good example. it portrays a new type of citizen informed by the American creed: the self-made American girl. Throughout, the story illuminates what it means to be an American--as opposed to a European--and, especially, an American woman.
