In 1896 Dr. George Edenharter, the superintendent of Central Indiana Hospital for the Insane in Indianapolis, designed and built a forward-thinking center on the hospital's grounds. Reflecting the newest trends, the Pathological Department would have one focus: using new medical science methodology to study the diseases of the mentally ill to improve their care. The building set a precedent: since that time Indiana and its physicians caring for the mentally ill have built other outstanding facilities and have taken landmark research into psychiatric diseases into new territory. This book tells the interesting story of science and the care of the mentally ill in the Hoosier state.
