Delta sorority sister Cheryl Fields has the brothers of Gamma Beta Psi in check. They know she knows their charm and womanizing ways are just fuel for a deep need to be respected and seen as strong. She respects men and Cheryl instinctively knows how deeply men want to respect her. She lets them.
What she doesn't understand is what love means. She gets it. She gives it. But understanding love comes slow.
Until she meets Perry. He teaches her how God sees women, what men really are after and how to hold a man's heart and attention. Unfortunately, when God comes in, everything that isn't God has to go. And Cheryl's life as the girlfriend of the most feared Gamma on the east coast, her first love, Mike "Frosty" Johnson, has a lot that ain't God.
Cheryl Fields began her life in Chicago, the only daughter of a hard-drinking Navy man. She lost her mother at an early age and had to learn love from dad, a man who had been hurt by his woman. Cheryl became tough and strong, and carried her hurt in a lonely place where only sisters and moms confide.
College and sorority and fraternity brothers became a paradise of all Cheryl missed growing up. Freshman year, Cheryl became a "Sweetheart" for Mike, soon-to-be leader of Gamma Beta Psi, and the most athletic and handsome brother on campus. Helping Mike pledge introduced Cheryl to the brutal pledge process most African-American fraternities and sororities practiced in the 1970's. On mostly White Maryland State University's campus, the tradition, and the hazing, were supreme.
Cheryl's senior year, Perry, a freshman, leads Cheryl to faith in Jesus. When Perry asks Cheryl to help when he pledges Gamma, tradition, jealousy and plain old bad luck invade Cheryl's life.
Though at times it seems like God's not there at all, Cheryl learns her new savior is always there, he always listens, and she even learns how to talk to God and hear what he says, even if it costs her the man she knows in her heart she was born to marry, the man who has been promised.
Only one can be number one.
