John Hawksley, a noble Russian, escapes with what is left of the family jewels when the Bolsheviki put his family out of commission. Among the jewels are the "Drums of Jeopardy," two sizable emeralds declared to bring the possessor all manner of bad luck. Russian agents trail Hawksley to New York, where circumstances place him under the protection of Kitty Conover, a likable newspaper woman, and "Cutty," her godfather, who is also a secret service agent. The chase of the emeralds places the characters in jeopardy.

A typical MacGrath story that hinges on a Bolshevik intrigue in America. Plausibility is a small concern of a plot which will hold devotees.

"Drums of Jeopardy" is a tale of fanatic hatreds defeated by love—of two strong types, locked in a death struggle—of historic jewels that end their dark history with a deed of light.
