Collectors edition! Even if you haven't read any Henry James, you are probably aware that one of his major themes was the tension between Americans and Europeans. The themes of this novel, about the misadventures of a rich American businessman who wants to marry an aristocratic Parisian widow, falls solidly into that category. Christopher Newman, a thoroughly democratic example of a self-made American, isn't even aware enough of prejudices of class and breeding to prepare himself for what he'll face at the hands of his chosen family. The novel is full of classic James characterizations and observations. the style is a delight to read.
