Make a Joyful Noise: A Brief History of Gospel Music in America

Gospel as a distinct musical genre has a long, rich history that pre-dates our enslaved ancestors' arrival on these shores. Songs, composed by Negro slaves, became the origin of American folk music and the e=genesis of all American musical genres that followed. The influence of Thomas A. Dorsey and James Cleveland on the development and growth of gospel music is documented. The significance of gospel music for salvation as well as the dilemma of gospel in this contemporary society are discussed. The book ends with interviews from people in gospel music ministry.
