Monique “Mo'Nique” Imes was born December 11, 1967 in Woodlawn, Maryland. Her father, Steven Imes Jr., was a professional drug counselor. Her mother, Alice Imes, was an engineer. She’s the youngest of four children.

She was raised in the Baltimore, Maryland, neighborhood where she was born, going on to graduate from Milford Mill High School. From there, she continued her education at Morgan State University. Mo'Nique graduated from the Broadcasting Institute of Maryland in 1987
