Follow all the kids from Flamingo Street and read about their childhood adventures, misadventures and lessons that they learned while growing up in a unique place and during a special time. A time when doors were kept unlocked as people went to work, windows opened for fresh air at night, and kids played outside until called in for dinner. A collection of fifty-two short stories suitable for the entire family - 110 Flamingo Street, stories from a simpler time is a vehicle that beckons the reader to climb aboard. Travel back to a simpler time. The stories will make you smile. The stories will make you laugh. And some will even make you cry.
This collection of short stories captures the unique way of life that only a small southern town can offer. In this second book in the series, sixteen charcoal drawings have also been included so readers will receive a true snapshot of what really happened during the seven years Rick, his three brothers and sister spent growing up at 110 Flamingo Street.
With this book, the kids from Flamingo Street will be right here for you all year long and for many more books to come. Hopefully they, and Rick’s unique observations of life, can add some humor to the start of your week. He has also included stories about The Wife, The Boy, and life’s little truths - general observations of life common to us all. Then he holds them up for all to read.
His hope is you’ll share some laughs with your family, a few tears along the way, and maybe these little stories, will soon become a part of your memories. As they have been a part of his. Hopefully they’ll help you pause, look at the world just a little differently. And smile.
“Every story in this book is true and happened just as written – to the best of my memory that is. Choosing just fifty-two stories out of the six hundred that have been written over the last eleven years was the most challenging part of creating this book. But choosing four stories to be included in “Reader Reaction” section was the easiest. Those have been included not because they’re extraordinary, but because of the extraordinary circumstances that occurred after they were published in our local newspaper and online.
The first story reached into a university classroom and grabbed the attention of an inquisitive professor.
The second wove its way down the hallways of a local elementary school where it captivated the attention of the teachers and staff.
The third story leaped across the great pond – all the way to England.
And what of the fourth story? Well, I’ll leave that one for you to read yourself. Besides, you probably wouldn’t believe me if I told you. But what happened is true…and nothing short of hilarious. And I bought the book to prove it.
The sixteen drawings in this book make the stories come alive. I wanted everyone, in no matter what part of the country they live, to not only read, but actually see and experience the fun we had while growing up in a small Georgia town. In a sense, the street we grew up on, Flamingo Street, is actually Anyone’s Street.” –Rick 2012
