There has been a lot of talk about the approaching end of the Mayan Calendar on December 21st, 2012. Most people see it as the end of an era and the opening of a Golden Age. Many others see it as the rapidly approaching end of the world.
What most of these prophets seem to forget is that it had to be something the Maya themselves had predicted for the end of their calendar. Most scholars of the Mayans claim it is nothing but the end of the calendar and a new one will start immediately following, just like the calendars we use.
But why one of such an incredible length of time, and measured in days rather than years?
The Mayan scholars, the New Age gurus and the prophets of doom each seem to have their own agenda and it is not supported in the writings of the Maya themselves.
