The Lightning Thief is a fiction book (or is it?) written by Rick Riordan.
(If you believe Percy Jackson, the hero and narrator of this book, the story is all real. But he advises you to try to read it as fiction. He wishes he had the luxury of thinking it was all pretend.)
The Lightning Thief is the first book in the Percy Jackson & The Olympians series. It centers around a young hero, Percy, who must right the wrongs of the gods. He has ten days to track down Zeuss stolen master bolt and return it to Mount Olympus. And he has to do this with a lot of pissed off gods and monsters on his tail!
Rick Riordan, the author of this fun re-imagining of classic Greek mythology, was born in San Antonio, Texas in 1964. He began writing in middle school and was heavily influenced by The Lord Of The Rings. His love of classic Greek and Norse mythology, which began in middle school, really shows through in this book!
The Lightning Thief won both the Mark Twain and Rebecca Caudill Awards. It has sold over a million copies since 2005, has been adapted into a major motion picture, and has been translated into ten different languages, included Croatian, Hebrew, and Serbian! It was also on the New York Times bestseller list.

Inside the museum, Mr. Brunner leads the class over to a thirteen foot tall column made of stone. It is a stele, or burial marker. This one has a sphinx on it. Percy is interested in what Mr. Brunner has to say, and keeps shushing the people in class who are talking. Every time Percy shushes someone, the math teacher, Mrs. Dodds, gives him the evil eye. Mrs. Dodds, who always wears a black leather jacket even if she is fifty, hates Percy.
Mr. Brunner asks Percy what is going on in one of the pictures on the stele.
Percy explains that picture on the stele is of Kronos, who is a titan, devouring his children. His wife hid baby Zeus, and when Zeus grew up, he made Kronos barf out his kids.
Outside, during lunch, a huge storm is brewing. (There has been freaky weather for months). Nancy Bobofit comes by Percy and his best friend Grover, who are sitting at the fountain. Nancy dumps her lunch in Grovers lap on purpose, and Percy looses it. Nancy ends up in the fountain.
