About the Author
Newton Booth Tarkington [1869-1946] was born in Indianapolis, IN. His maternal uncle Newton Booth, his namesake, was Governor of California. He attended Purdue and Princeton Universities. At Princeton, he edited the Nassau Literary Magazine, He received two honorary Princeton degrees, an A.M. in 1899 and a Litt.D. in 1918. In 1902, he served in the Indiana House of Representatives. He spent his later life in Kennebunkport, ME. His papers were left to Colby College, Waterville, ME. He is best known for his Pulitzer Prize-winning novels The Magnificent Ambersons (1918) and Alice Adams (1921). Orson Welles filmed The Magnificent Ambersons in 1942. The Modern Library includes it in its top-100 novels. His novels The Two Vanrevels (1902) and Mary's Neck (1932) ranked on annual best-seller lists a total of nine times.
