To those who are interested in science, science fiction, space flight, and the future of the human race, no doubt these are demoralizing times in America. But there is still plenty of cause for hope. It’s not a matter of if, but when we move out into space. It’s as inevitable as was the discovery of the New World--if Columbus’s expedition had been called off at the last minute, it’s a sure thing that someone else would have done it, five, ten, twenty, or fifty years later. Whether the general public or the politicians want to admit it or not, Earth is getting too small for our civilization. We will move out.
Fourteen short stories tell of futures where the human race has moved out into space, and deal in a variety of ways with the social, psychological, and scientific consequences of the conquest of the stars.
ASTEROID ETERNIA-Clarissa is a young woman sent to investigate allegations of illegal human cloning on a remote asteroid. She never imagined that this one assignment would change her life forever--and reveal that she is not even who she thought she was!
BUG-OUT-A misanthropic sociopath sets out to eliminate all bugs on Earth and ends up on an unplanned mission to Mars.
CRY FOR EARTH-Naive inhabitants of a distant, idyllic planet set off on a quest to learn the secrets of their world, only to discover that they are humanity's last gasp of survival.
THE FIGHT-A human commands a mission to negiotiate peace between Earth and the alien Skylryyth, but his temper and his robotic assistant's flawed logic lead to an unusual confrontation.
THE LAST JOURNEY OF THE WANDERER-A mission to test a new drive system leads deeper and deeper into a psychological mystery that ends in incest, murder, and frontier justice.
DOOM STAR-Two astronauts doomed to certain death must decide how to spend their last twenty minutes.
MEMOIR OF A MARTIAN-A private industrialist who never gave up until he became the first man on Mars writes his personal account of how he did it--and why.
THE LONG WAIT-A relativistic accident takes a test pilot away from his wife for millions of years, during which she waits faithfully for his return.
THE NEW ISLAND-A fishing boat captain notices a strange splash in the ocean and the emergence of a mysterious new island, a discovery which takes him into a secret government project that may change the world.
UBERMENSCH-A cataclysmic war brings a civilization to its destruction, and its last survivor turns to his mythical savior for help.
THE ANCIENT SHIP OF ORION-The last surviving crew member aboard a lost generation ship plans to return to Earth and visit his mad fantasies on the rest of the human race.
THE LAST DAY OF THE POSTMODERN ERA-A science writer visits a local science convention, little suspecting the innoccuous event will change his life.
STARSHIP-The world's first interstellar starship, Enterprise, bears little resemblance to its fictional couterpart--or to any previous generation's dream of exploring the stars.
MATTER OVER MIND-Astronauts aboard a stranded wormhole starship, lost in interstellar space, find themselves trapped inside their shipmate's hallucination.
