“At first blush, how important or interesting could the school experience of a young man from Mayagüez from 1955 through 1968 be? The answer —which eluded me for a long time— is that, very often, one’s own story is the story of many others. Furthermore, there are things in it that may go beyond the merely anecdotal. I like to think that in this story, as personal and modest as it is, there are clues to understand something of our country’s history of the second half of the 20th century.”

The first Friday of every month, a day when attendance at mass was obligatory in Catholic schools, is the pretext for a tale of how the boy, and, later on, the young man, builds his character in a world of inflexible rules and stiff nun’s habits.
