An article written about the heroic (and somewhat comical) rescue of Billy Thompson by Bat Masterson in 1880.
Billy Thompson, the brother to the notorious gunfighter Ben Thompson, had made the crucial mistake of shooting up the Cowboy's Rest Saloon on Rail Road Street. In the process he shot Bill Tucker, who ran the saloon. Billy managed to shoot off part of Tucker's left thumb and the tips of some fingers. Tucker then grabbled his ten gauge shotgun filled Billy's back and leg with buckshot.
Bat Masterson was commissioned by Ben Thompson to save his brother from a very imminent hanging. With some skulduggery on his part Bat was able to get Billy out of Ogallala and with the the help of Buffalo Bill Cody back to Kansas.
One of the great true tales of the Old West.
