About the Author
CECIL WILLIAM MERCER [1885-1960] was a British writer of novels and short stories. He wrote under the pen name Dornford Yates. Yates originally wrote short stories for magazines. His first published story appeared in Punch. His next one was publshed in Red Magazine. His first "Berry" story was published in Pearsons Magazine. Subsequently many of his stories were collected and published in book form. Some of his stories that appeared in Windsor Magazine were collected and republished as a book under the title The Brother of Daphne (1914). The "Berry" books introduce Yates's character Bertram "Berry" Pleydell and family — "Berry & Co". These humorous romances depict upper class life and changes in culture and economic conditions in England during the first half of the Twentieth-century.
