The novels begins in the Paris and Berlin of the 1930s. Michael Harrington is a brilliant English physicist working at the Max Planck Institute in Berlin. He marries an American heiress, and they settle down in Berlin. But Hitler threatens their peace, and they are forced to move to London. A personal tragedy strikes Michael and he is never quite the same again. However, his physics work goes on unaffected. Part II of the novel concentrates on David Harrington, Michael's son and a fine writer. The death of his father leaves many questions. Finally, David and Anne, his wife and a City Ballet dancer, determine the father was murdered by the U.S. government. Very soon thereafter, every intelligence agency in the world desperately wants the HARRINGTON EQUATIONS. David and Anne's journey take them across the US, into Brazil, on to Paris, and finally to Switzerland, where all issues are finally resolved.

If you like John Le Carre, but find his characters asexual, you will enjoy Persephone. There is a place for love in the English language novel.
