THE SOUTH POLE is the remarkable story of Roald Amundsen's expedition to the South Pole in 1911-1912, the first explorer to reach there. Despite Amundsen's success, his expedition had initially planned to explore the North Pole. After the success of the Peary expedition in 1909-1910, Amundsen altered his plans (without telling his men), and became the first man to reach the South Pole, just 33 days ahead of his British rival Robert Falcon Scott. While Amundsen and his men reached the pole and lived to tell of it, Scott and his men died as they struggled to escape the worsening Antarctic winter.
