The Hairy Ape by Eugene O'Neill

THE HAIRY APE is the story of steamship fireman, Yank, whose encounter with a wealthy socialite leaves him in despair. Called a "filthy beast" by the socialite, Yank seeks for meaning in a life seemingly devoid of it. He joins the Wobblies, but is expelled for wanted to engage in violence against the rich. Alone and friendless, Yank makes his way to the Zoo, where he tries to befriend a caged Gorilla whom he identifies with.
