"Call of the Brazos" is the story of Matt Jorgensen in Bozeman, Montana who is in love with Beth Paterson, a female attorney for his mother's estate who exonerates him from a crime committed twenty years prior. When called back to Montana from his home in Texas, across the Brazos, he finds his mother has passed away. More to his dislike is the fact that the negro trail cook for his father's trail drive had died and was buried in the ground that also holds his mother's remains. He is from the south and hates this fact, and therefore seeks to have the black man dug up and reburied elsewhere against Beth's wishes. No one seems to be on his side, and after he has had a fight with some killers and has killed Biggun's two brothers, he is ambushed on the way home from a drunk. While unconscious, he reminisces about the time he met his first black man. It was when he traves through Tennessee before the Civil War. He met Ginny McBride, a plantation owner's daughter, tough as the come and only 18 years old. They fall in love. Matt learns the cotton business and the life of the black slaves. He admires them and their culture so much that when one of them is killed, he seeks to capture the killer, even if it mean leaving and possibly losing his only true love. He has a supernatural experience while unconscious with his lost love, Ginny. When he is rescued from the ambush, he finds Beth, his new friend and lover, and feels the call back to the Brazos; a ranch south of Waco across the Brazos. She wants to know if she is going to be his girl and go back with him, or will she be the 'GHOST" of his past.
