About the Author
GERHART HAUPTMANN [1862-1946] was born a German in Silesia (now in Poland). After studying Art and Sculpture, he devoted his career to writing primarily dramas. In 1889, his first drama, Vor Sonnenaufgang (1889) inaugurated the German literary naturalistic movement. In 1892, he wrote his fourth play Die Weber (The Weavers ), about the Silesian weavers' uprising in 1844. In 1912, Hauptmann was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature "primarily in recognition of his fruitful, varied and outstanding production in the realm of dramatic art." Hauptman also wrote several novels of which Atlantis is his second.
