The Mormon Prophet

Lily Dougall was a successful writer of fiction and religious philosophical works. She was born 16 April 1858 in Montreal, the daughter of John Dougall, a Scottish immigrant who founded a profitable religious paper, the Montreal Witness, and Elizabeth Redpath Dougall, the daughter of another Scottish immigrant. In 1880 Dougall moved to Edinburgh as the companion to an aunt. Here she prepared for her writing career by studying at the University of Edinburgh and the University of St. Andrews, eventually completing her degree requirements in 1887. Her first short story appeared in 1889, her first novel (Beggars All) in 1892.
