About the Author
Ernest Poole [1880-1950] was born in Chicago. In 1902, he graduated from Princeton University. Before and during World War I, he was a journalist for the Saturday Evening Post in Europe. In 1917, he was a journalist for The New Republic magazine reporting in Russian about the Revolution. His novel The Harbor (1915), set in Brooklyn's waterfront, is considered the first novel to view of unions positively. He wrote promoting social reforms, including ending child labor. In 1918, for His Family (1917), he received the first Pulitzer Prize for the Novel. The story revolves around widower Roger Gale who struggles with how his family respond to changes in New York society in the 1910s. His Second Wife (1918) was the sequel.
