South of South Beach is a look back to a time when South Beach was not the glitzy Art-Deco district it is today but was a crumbling, dilapidated section of real estate, located from the ocean west to Alton Road, north to Lincoln Road and south to the Dog-Track. Chris Dundee operates the 5th Street Gym and promotes boxing at the Miami Beach Auditorium where, in the fall of 1966, a young middleweight out of Washington, D.C. finds himself, looking for fights, and quickly finds that one place he wants to avoid, at all costs, is a wicked jumbling of rocks and boulders that formed one side of a jetty where the cruise ships came into the port of Miami. This jetty, adjacent to the Dog-Track, was known by habituates and race-track touts as the only place south of South Beach and a place where you didn't want to end up, as only the homeless and hopeless camped out there. The young boxer gets a lesson when he sees up close what the ocean can do to a human body and says a silent prayer that it will never happen to him.
