Unlikely circumstances bring together five people from widely divergent backgrounds for the execution of a unique crime: a Mexican girl displaced by a devastating tsunami; an ex-con determined to rebuild his life as an upstanding citizen; a beautiful, talented actress and her opportunist agent-husband; a lovely, wealthy woman and her successful architect husband; and his jealous, dissatisfied younger brother.

Maria, a sixteen-year-old whose family and village have been obliterated by an unlikely sequence of natural disasters, is devastated by her losses. But a cousin has escaped to Los Angeles, to work for a white man in America. She leaves the catastrophe behind to seek him out in “the city with the angels.” But crossing the border—illegally—turns out to be a nightmare beyond anything she could have imagined.

Danny Delaney, a newly paroled prisoner, vows to live within the law. Despite his lack of education, he hones his innate organizational skills, finds employment, and starts on the road to the good life he dreamed of in prison. But temptation abounds, luring him back to a life of crime which will potentially allow him to live in luxury much more quickly.

Doris Vurell, a neglected child, leaves home at sixteen to seek fame and fortune in Hollywood with her beauty and talents. She is rescued from the streets by Todd, an aspiring agent, who marries her and attempts to manage her career. His delusions of grandeur and multiple addictions, however, lead him and his wife down a path they never imagined they’d travel.

Laura and Paul Wellington are a popular, respected, and very wealthy couple who live an opulent, privileged life in Malibu—which makes them the perfect target for a crime. The perpetrators and the act itself, though, are nearly beyond their comprehension.

John Wellington, Paul’s unlikeable, weak, apathetic younger brother, works at the family’s long-established architectural firm. His smoldering resentment for his older brother results in a series of missteps that drive him to despair—and desperate men do desperate things.
