America, land of promise —
where only some promises are kept.
They came from across the endless waters. First came the colonists, then came the Irish, Italians, Jewish and the newest newcomers, the Hispanic day laborers. Each immigrant sought to place his mark indelibly upon the North Shore of Long Island.
Dan Destin was one of them.
He came from Southern Italy, thirty years ago, without a proverbial dime in his pocket. He settled on the North Shore of Long Island, the famed Gold Coast of yesteryear. He made a fortune in construction. His son, Marcus, a successful architect, bought a gold coast mansion built in 1916. Newcomer, Dan Destin, epitomizes the American Dream. But the law of unintended consequences will wreak havoc with Dan and all those he loves.
Destin Enterprises, the father & son company, has purchased the right to build on sixty acres of prime land at Gold Coast Seaport overlooking the Long Island Sound. Prestige International Resorts & Villas, a hotel conglomerate, wants to build a twelve story luxury hotel with vacation villas at the seaport with Destin Enterprise’s approval. Instead, Marcus Destin visits the hotel giant's headquarters in Orlando to give their executives bad news: the seaport project will have Victorian-era homes and a charming seaport retail village, but no mega hotel, and no villas. Then a CAT 3 hurricane strikes Central Florida. Marcus is missing and may be wandering the streets of Orlando with amnesia.
At the same time, the dedication ceremony for the new seaport ferry terminal is taking place on Long Island. As the ceremony draws to a close, Marcus's young son,
Tiberius, discovers what he thinks are the archeological remains of a murdered Native American, just yards from the waterfront site. The project could be thrown into turmoil.
Reporter, Toni Fortunato, loves the Destin family. She was their sitter when Tiberius was a baby. An expert on local hsitory, she delves into the mysterious remains found buried at the waterfront. What she uncovers will cause Long Islanders to revisit long forgotten history about the American Revolution, loyalty to the British, Benedict Arnold, and Washington's spy, "Culper Jr.' The results will surprise everyone, but it will shock the Destin family.
Marcus Destin's best friend and lawyer, Mitch Landry, joins investigator, Jericho Shriver to rescue Marcus and save the project. But Prestige International is erecting roadblocks at every turn. Their private eye, former Israeli intelligence officer, Abe Mahler, is leading everyone in the wrong direction -- for reasons only he knows. Saudi Arabia and Israel hold clues to the disappearance of the architect.
Mitch Landry has feelings for Jericho. But the woman he loves was murdered three years ago. Now, he drinks himself into oblivion. Jericho cares for him, but her patience is running out. Their search for Marcus will bring them to Rome and it will bring them closer together — but in order to find his friend, Mitch must gamble everything — even Jericho’s life.
Newcomers have been arriving in America, the land of promise, for three hundred and fifty years, but to Dan Destin's sad discovery, not all promises in America are kept.
