Sandals: The Journey of Abraham and Sarah and Hagar

This book of poems depicts the life of Abraham and Sarah, Hagar, and Abraham's two sons Ishmael and Isaac, capturing the tenderness of feeling that once existed between Abraham and Sarah and tracing the strains placed on their love for each other in the long years of waiting for the birth of the promised son and heir. Although the poems create an imagined world - the Biblical record is highly suggestive but very sparce on details - each poem is an attempt to present the characters as real people, struggling to understand God's calling upon their lives.

The excellent Afterword by Dr. Clyde Curry Smith offers serious Biblical scholars an oppotunity to explore the same Biblical passages from an historian's point of view.
