A discourse about a scrupulous conscience

In 1683, Dr. Calamy preached his famous sermon, which was afterwards published under the title of “A Discourse about a Scrupulous Conscience.” No other work of its kind or size gained more credit for its author, or was more taken notice of by the public. Taking Luke 11:41 as his text, he expounded on the idea that everything should be subordinated to a humble and practical piety. The sermon was understood as a defense of the Church of England and a criticism of the non-Conformists and dissenters who were agitating against church reforms of the day, worried that many parishioners had as a result abandoned the church.
