MATHILDA, Mary Shelley's second completed novel, tells the story of Mathilda's father's confession of incestuous love for her, followed by his suicide by drowning. Her love affair with a gifted young poet fails to prevent Matilda's emotional withdrawal, her depression, or her lonely death.
